Introducing ReUse consortium member - KYBURZ Switzerland AG.

KYBURZ Switzerland AG (KYBURZ) develops and produces high-quality electric vehicles for delivery companies, industrial companies, municipalities and private individuals. Starting in 2017 KYBURZ has developed a revolutionary system for recycling the batteries used in its vehicles. This enables as much as 91% of the materials used to be separated and recovered. Since then, the process has continuously improved, and the knowledge is shared with partners in various projects and initiatives. 

In 2022 KYBURZ Switzerland AG received the unrestricted operation license for its battery recycling facility close to Zurich (CH) and is an official battery recycling company since. 

In the ReUse project,  KYBURZ operates a partially automated direct battery recycling facility to dismantle sample battery cells and modules as well as end-of-life (EOL) batteries from KYBURZ vehicles. The established detachment process is used to recover the active material coatings from the current collectors of various samples delivered by project partners and the electrodes from EOL battery cells and to provide the reclaimed coating materials in various forms to the subsequent subprojects. 

Additionally KYBURZ investigates how the discharging process of EOL batteries, which typically have an unknown state of charge, can be optimized such that the discharge time is minimal without compromising the quality of reclaimed materials or safety.
